Getting SSN
Once you are in the USA, the first thing to do is to get your SSN : without SSN, you cannot get a debit card nor a checks, you cannot rent an apartment, you cannot get your driving license, etc...
To do that, it's very easy. Here is the way we manage to get our SSNs in only 10 days.
Remember that both L1 visa holder AND L2 visa holder can get SSN (without having EAD for L2 visa holder).
1st Step
Open a P.O. Box. To receive your SSN, you have to give an address.
To open a P.O. Box, just go any Post Office. The price is $35 for 6 months.
2nd Step
Go to any Social Security Agency. We were told that it's better to wait for your DHS registration before applying for SSN (the process is supposed to be faster). We personally applied 4 days after arrival.
To know if you are registered, you can simply ask a SSA agent to perform the check.
Note that you can apply for SSN from any SS agency. So if you to go on hollidays, go on! Just find hotels close to SSA ;)
3rd Step
Get you SSN.
You're done!
